What I like the most about Philippines

I am just trying to make more post to fill up my blog. I apologize if this appear to be like I am just trying to talk a lot about myself when there is nothing really interesting about me. So I hope you have to bear with me for being an attention seeking whore for a while. When I get my camera fixed, I will get back to posting more of food recipe. In the meantime, allow me to fill up my blog with more posts.

The thing that I really adore about the Filipino are the musicians. I think everybody in the world have some sort of encounter with Filipino musicians. They are everywhere performing in hotels and clubs. They are really good in doing covers and sound almost the same like the original. They might sound like James Ingram when they sing Just Once but when you talk to them, they might sound different from their singing.

After living few years in the Philippines, I was exposed to many OPM ( Original Philippines Music ) and I loved it a lot. I would say many songs that are English or Tagalog is superior in quality. I have the privileged of being good friends with popular musicians in the Philippines namely the group South Border and Freestyle. Though them I learned more about OPM and I became more observant about the music industry.

I am really and happy when I read the news of Arnel Pineda joining the group Journey as the front man. I’ve seen him performing in the Asian club circuit before joining Journey. He would cover the song “Faithfully” and it sounded exactly like Steve Perry. In my mind I couldn’t help thinking about what he feels about being the real deal now. He must be a big fan of Journey and for years he has been covering their songs and now when he sings it, it is not cover anymore. He is Journey now!!!! Even though I am not a Filipino, I can feel the pride like a Pinoy.

Another artist that I really love is Charice Pempengco. I came to know about this petite singer when my brother sent me a link of her Youtube video when she performed at Star King Show. I was blown away by her singing prowess and from then on, I became a fan. So when she was invited to Ellen and Oprah, I was so happy for her and I can sense that greatness will definitely follow this girl. When the hitmaker David Foster took her under his wings, Charice is destine to be a Diva. She is the only singer that EVER made me cry just by listening to her and watching her videos. I know is a bit gay but I am not ashamed to state the truth. I am not normally stat struck but with Charice, I think I would be. ( My friends are gonna have a field day teasing me if they read this ). I would like to congratulate Charice for her debut album that was just release few days ago. Here is a music video of her hit song with Iyaz – Pyramid. I believe this video will spice up your life too.

Living in the Philippines

I came to the Philippines in 2004 after a friend invited me over. After the visit, I often come to the Philippines and stay for at least a few months. I’ve been doing this for the past 6 years. I can understand quite a bit of Tagalog words but I can’t actually construct sentences. This is going to be one of my goal in the future to be able to learn how to speak it fluently.

After 6 years of being in and out of the country, I think I can label myself as half Pinoy ( according to my Filipino barkadas ). I understand the culture pretty well and most importantly I know the difference between Kapuso and Kapamilya. Hahahahaha…..and my barkadas told me that if I want to be a full fledge Pinoy, I got to master the language. Another reason why they would not accept me as a full blown Pinoy is because I do not embrace Filipino food as much as they do. I have travel to many parts of the world and in order to make your host happy is to love their food. I am very familiar with Filipino food but I am sad to say that I am not loving it as much as other Asian food. I am not saying that the food is not good but is just simply too blend for my taste as I am accustomed to spicy food.

This is one of the reason why I started cooking a little bit more as I prefer to prepare spicy dishes for myself. Every now and then I will cook and then invite my barkadas over for lunch and dinner. They seem to like the spicy dishes and ask me to give them the recipe. I hardly cook when I am in Singapore as eating out is really cheap. I will post more about the eating scenes in Singapore in the future.

Whenever I come back to the Philippines, I will bring back quite a decent amount of spices that would last me for at least 3 months. Everytime I do get request from my friends for pasalubong. They often suggest that I start a business to supply all these spices for the Philippines market. I am very keen of the idea but I have zero knowledge on how the business works. I don’t think it would be so easy to just convince the masses to embrace different food. Careful planning must be made in order to introduce new taste to the Filipino market. This is one of the main reason why I started this blog and hope to get some response regarding the idea.

Recipe of spicy fried bee hoon

I swore when I snapped the picture of my fried bee hoon with my cell phone, the quality seems to look good on the screen. But when I transferred it to my laptop, the image seems to look very blur. I am not going to blame on my Sony Ericsson cell phone but I will blame my lack of photography skills. I will not use this reason to get an I phone myself too. I am never a big fan of cellphone and I am happy to be able to make calls, receive and send text messages.

Even though the picture is blur but I swore it tasted all right…LOL. I guess for now you just have to take my word for it. Hopefully one day I might save enough money to open a restaurant in Manila. So without further adieu, here is the simple recipe of SPICY FRIED BEE HOON.

INGREDIENTS :-

  • One packet of Bee Hoon ( soak in water )
  • 250 gm of beef cubes ( cut into small cubes – 3 cm – 5cm )
  • Dried shrimp ( soaked in water first )
  • Half cabbage ( cut into thin slice )
  • 2 eggs
  • Red chilli ( recommended to use 3, put less if can’t take to spicy )
  • One red onion
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • Soya sauce – 5 teaspoon
  • Salt, sugar and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil

PREPARATION :-

  • Ground the chilli and garlic – as fine as possible
  • Slice the onion
  • Beat the eggs and then fry it like an omelet. When is ready slice the egg 1cm x 2cm

COOKING :-

  • Heat up oil in wok
  • Put in the garlic and onion, stir fry till fragrant
  • Add in dried shrimp
  • Add beef, stir fry a little and proceed to add cilli, salt and soya sauce
  • Then add cabbage and stir fry for another 3-5 minutes, depends on how big is your fire and add sugar ( not too much )
  • Add the bee hoon and start to stir fry till all ingredient mixes well.
  • If bee hoon keeps sticking to the pan, add a little bit more oil
  • Stir fry it and keep tasting and add more salt if you wish to make it saltier. You can also use fish sauce ( patis )if you like.
  • When the all ingredients mixes well with bee hoon, make sure the bee hoon look dry. Add pepper and it is ready to be serve.

I can’t believe that I just made a post on how to cook spicy bee hoon. This is my first attempt to be giving out recipe and I hope for those of you who read it can understand it. I have to admit I find it quite fun to be posting food recipe although I felt like a 40 years old house wife while doing it. I hope to improve on my writing skills in order to give the exact instructions in the future. In the meantime, try out the recipe and I am sure you will like it. If it taste like crap, then is most probably your FAULT. Hahaha….happy cooking.

My very first post

I just finished posting in the ABOUT page and now attempting to make my first post in the main page. Just set up this blog 2 hours ago and I am very excited to be making many good posts. I am currently in the Philippines and the weather is really hot. I guess my electric bill will shoot to the roof. I try my best not to use as much AC as possible but the heat is really unbearable.

I just cooked some spicy fried bee hoon with some dried shrimp, beef, cabbage and egg. It taste pretty all right and I just used whatever ingredients that is available in my fridge. I am quite happy with the result as I seldom make this dish. For my second post I will provide the recipe for the dish and step by step guide on how to make spicy fried bee hoon. My digital cam ran out of battery but luckily my cell phone has a camera and I managed to take a picture of my dish.

So stay tune for my spicy fried bee hoon recipe and I can assure you it is very simple to cook.
